About Formal America
Twenty-Nine Years of Excellence in Formal Wear and Event Style
Our Story
Formal America was founded in 1997 on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan by a former wardrobe director from the Metropolitan Opera who believed that every man deserves to experience the confidence of perfectly fitted formal wear. What began as a small atelier offering bespoke alterations and a curated rental collection has evolved into one of the most respected names in American formal wear.
In the early years, we outfitted Broadway opening nights, diplomatic receptions at the United Nations, and debutante balls at the Plaza Hotel. Word spread quickly among event planners and social secretaries that Formal America delivered not just garments, but peace of mind. By 2003, we had opened our second location in Los Angeles to serve the entertainment industry, followed by Chicago in 2007, Miami in 2011, and Las Vegas in 2015.
Today, Formal America operates five flagship showrooms, maintains partnerships with forty-two authorized dealers, and employs over two hundred staff including master tailors, style consultants, event coordinators, and logistics specialists. We remain privately held, which allows us to prioritize client experience over quarterly earnings.
Our Philosophy
We believe that dressing well is a form of good manners. When you attend a wedding, a gala, or a memorial service, your attire communicates respect for the occasion and the people who invited you. A poorly fitted rental jacket or scuffed formal shoes undermines that respect.
Our philosophy is simple: every client receives the same attention we would give to a head of state or a leading actor. We measure twice. We press every garment before it leaves our facility. We deliver twenty-four hours early so there is time for a final check. We answer the phone at nine o'clock on a Sunday morning when a groom realizes his brother's flight was delayed and we need to rush a replacement tuxedo to the hotel.
Our Team
Formal America's tailoring staff includes graduates of the London College of Fashion, the Parisian Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale, and the New York Fashion Institute of Technology. Our style consultants undergo a six-month training program before they are permitted to advise clients independently. They study color theory, body proportion analysis, fabric science, and the history of formal dress codes.
Our event coordination division specializes in large-scale formal wear logistics. They have managed ensembles for corporate galas of eight hundred guests, military balls requiring mess dress precision, and destination weddings where forty groomsmen needed coordinated fittings across three time zones.
- Privately Held Since 1997 No private equity pressure, no franchise quality variance. Every decision is made by people who will personally answer client calls.
- Sustainability Commitment We recycle damaged garments into insulation, donate retired inventory to theater companies and university drama departments, and use biodegradable garment bags.
- Community Investment Annual scholarships for aspiring tailors at FIT and Parsons, plus formal wear donations for underprivileged students attending prom.
- Designer Relationships Direct partnerships with Armani, Hugo Boss, Tom Ford, and Ralph Lauren ensure authentic pieces, not gray-market copies.
