How to Measure Yourself for the Perfect Formal Wear Fit

Professional Measurement

A perfectly fitted tuxedo begins with precise measurements. Our master tailors use a fifteen-point measurement system that accounts for not just chest and waist, but shoulder slope, armhole depth, back width, and posture characteristics that mass-market rental companies ignore.

When you visit a Formal America showroom, your fitting takes approximately twenty minutes. We take photographs of your posture and shoulder line to reference during alterations. Your measurements are stored in our secure client database for future rentals and purchases.

Key Measurements

Chest: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape horizontal and snug but not tight. Add two inches for comfortable movement.

Waist: Measure around your natural waistline, typically at the navel. Do not suck in your stomach; formal trousers should sit comfortably at this point.

Inseam: Measure from the crotch seam to the floor along the inside of your leg. Wear the shoes you plan to wear with the ensemble for accuracy.

Sleeve: Measure from the center back of your neck, across your shoulder, and down to your wrist bone. The jacket sleeve should end at the wrist bone, revealing one-quarter to one-half inch of shirt cuff.

Shoulder: Measure from the end of one shoulder bone to the other. The jacket shoulder should match this exactly; padding should not extend beyond your natural shoulder line.

Neck: Measure around the base of your neck where the collar will sit. Add one-half inch for comfort.
